Within 10 days: Thanks to day tourists, Venice already collected 700,000 euros

In 2025, the number of days with registration and payment is to be increased.

144,645 people paid the special tax of five euros, which all visitors who want to go to the lagoon city between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. must pay. To do this, they must purchase a QR code online in advance, which is checked at the most important access points to the city.

The income so far has been higher than the community expected. However, they do not yet cover the costs of the booking portal, the communication campaign and the entry fee controls, the municipality said.

When to pay

The entrance fee will be charged on a total of 29 days in 2024: from April 25th to 30th, from May 1st to 5th and on all other weekends (Saturdays and Sundays) until July 13th and 14th. This excludes the weekend of Republic Day (June 1st to 2nd), a national holiday in Italy. If you want to go to the smaller islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello, you don’t need a ticket. Around 75 people are deployed to 16 locations in the city every day to check the QR code. Checkpoints have been set up in Piazzale Roma near the train station, at the Punta Sabbioni ferry port and in Chioggia.

The daily fee causes debate. City Council member Michele Boato asked for a review of how the data was processed. He warned of the risk that personal data could be passed on and called for strict controls.

How to proceed

The city administration expects to collect meaningful data on tourism in order to organize phase two of the entrance fee: in 2025 the number of days with registration and payment is to be increased. A maximum number of tourists in the historic center will be introduced, after which the fee will increase from five to ten euros.

Currently exempt from the tax are citizens of the Veneto region, workers, students or women and men belonging to other categories who do not pay the daily fee but must register on the online platform. Children under 14, disabled people and accompanying persons are also required to book but are not required to pay. Visitors can obtain the entrance ticket on the multilingual website set up by the municipality www.cda.ve.it. Payment is made by credit card or Paypal. The ticket can also be purchased in tobacconists.

More tourists than residents

Venice is in danger of “dying out” under the pressure of mass tourism. In the old town, the number of tourist beds overtook the number of residents in December. There were 50,016 guest beds and 49,211 residents, the association Venessia.com announced based on data from the city registry office. Including mainland residents, Venice has a population of around 260,000. More and more people are moving there from the old town.
