At the liberation celebration last Sunday in Mauthausen, as every year, the more than 90,000 murdered people were remembered. This year, however, there is a bitter aftertaste from the peaceful commemoration organized by the Mauthausen Committee Austria (MKÖ), which also assumes responsibility for the memorial on this day. On the one hand, an 18-year-old man from the Upper Austria concentration camp association – and not someone from the “Party of Labor” group as reported in other media – who was carrying a Palestine flag caused a stir. And on the other hand, there were “Free Palestine” writings in the guest book and on a wooden wall, as “Der Standard” reports.
