Mathilde and Walter Gruber only left their house in Unterach am Attersee for two days. When they returned, they had new neighbors – and no room for their mail. In the meantime, blue tits had rented a short-term apartment and built a nest.
“At first we could only watch them flying in and out. “Last week we took a look and saw that there were six or seven young birds living in it,” says Walter Gruber. The family has no problem with the unusual accommodation – on the contrary: Gruber immediately put up a notice: “Please do not drop any mail! “Bird’s Nest in the Mailbox” is now written on the front door. “We agreed with the postman that he would simply deliver the mail to our front door,” says Gruber.
The new tenants have already gotten used to their neighbors exceptionally well: “They are not at all afraid to feed their offspring,” says Gruber. After hatching, the young birds are usually fed in the nest for 16 to 18 days.
