The accusation of ex-President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko of high treason negatively affects the country’s image. Mayor of Kiev Vitaliy Klitschko wrote about this in his Telegram channel on December 24.
“When there are such serious challenges both inside the country and at its borders, such actions negatively affect both the situation in the state and the image of Ukraine,” the message says.
In his opinion, today, as never before, the unity of Ukrainians and joint efforts of all patriotic forces are needed in order to preserve the country, its independence and the European future.
Earlier on December 24, the prosecutor’s office of Ukraine asked the court to arrest Poroshenko in the case of treason. In turn, the ex-president said on the air of Channel 5 that there was no evidence of his guilt.
The State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) of Ukraine on December 20 announced the possible involvement of the ex-president in high treason. However, in the process of serving the summons for interrogation, the former Ukrainian leader ignored the security officials and left. Then Poroshenko left Ukraine.
The case was initiated under Part 1 and Part 3 of Art. 258-5 (“Financing of terrorism”), part 1 of Art. 111 (“High treason”) and Part 1 of Art. 258-3 (“Creation of a terrorist organization”) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. The investigation is being led by the Attorney General’s Office.
On November 12, the head of the Security Service of Ukraine Ivan Bakanov said that the special service is checking the possible involvement of Poroshenko and the ex-head of the National Bank Valeria Gontareva in treason when purchasing coal from Donbass.
