Eleven kilometers south of the town center of Grünau, nature puts on a spectacle. It’s not just the locals who relax by the crystal clear water of the Almsee who know this. Tourists from all over Upper Austria also know this – and since social media, the whole world knows it. Upper Austria Tourism therefore ranks the Almsee among the “15 Instagram hotspots” in the country. The number of visitors increased, but the community hardly had any benefit, apart from the heavy excursion traffic. That should change now.

From mid-May – the exact date depends on the progress of the preparatory work – the large parking areas at the southern and northern tips of the lake will be charged. This was decided by the Kremsmünster Abbey as the owner in collaboration with the municipality and the Traunsee-Almtal tourism association. There will be no barriers or parking tickets; the parking duration will be determined automatically based on “data protection-compliant license plate scans” at the entrance and exit.
Special regulations for mountaineers
Payment is made at the end of the stay, stating the license plate number. Both cash and contactless payments will be possible. The fee for a car per day is five euros. There is a special regulation for mountaineers and hikers who spend the night in the refuges in the Totes Gebirge: They pay 15 euros, but can leave the car parked for up to seven days. However, camping is prohibited.
And the most important thing – at least for the community of Grünau: Part of the income will stay in the region around the Almsee and will serve to maintain the infrastructure. “I think it was time for something to happen here. We’ve already had a bad reputation for saying that we have a natural gem here that is being completely overrun and we’re left with nothing. I believe that the fees are also humane,” says Klaus Kramesberger, mayor of Grünau. He is particularly pleased that the added value remains in the region. Birgit Stöhr, forester at Kremsmünster Abbey, says that “wild parking along the road and on nature conservation areas” is now a thing of the past.

As reported, the communities of Ebensee (Offensee, Langbathsee) and Gosau (Gosausee) are also trying to manage the parking areas at the popular excursion destinations as quickly as possible. Since May 1st, fees have also applied to the parking areas of the Krippenstein cable car in Obertraun – in addition to the use of the cable car.
