The officers became aware of the driver because he pulled out of a parking space around 3 a.m. and squealed his tires. A patrol then followed him and turned on the blue lights. When the 19-year-old noticed this, he accelerated and wanted to drive away. However, in the area of Völkermarkter Straße he lost control in a curve and the rear broke out. The car was thrown against a curb and hit two trees and a billboard stand near a traffic island.
The final stop was at the garage entrance of a house, where the young man crashed into the center pillar. A 17-year-old passenger was injured and was taken to Klagenfurt Hospital by the rescue team. The driver and three other 17-year-old passengers remained uninjured.
