It is a local mountain guide, as a spokesman for the tourism authority in the capital Kathmandu confirmed on Thursday. Shortly before his death on Tuesday, the 53-year-old reached the summit of Mount Makalu – the fifth highest mountain in the world – with a group of foreign mountaineers and other Nepalese mountain guides.

He later had health problems and his colleagues tried to carry him downstairs. In the meantime he died. The cause of death was initially unclear, said the spokesman. The tourism authority had issued paid permits to a total of 59 foreign mountaineers to climb Mount Makalu this spring season.
