Employees of the fattening farm called the fire department around 8 p.m. because they first noticed the smell of fire and then flames coming from the rear area of the stable, the Styria State Police Department said on Friday. Around a thousand animals were saved and two firefighters were injured.
300 firefighters on duty
Although the fire was noticed quickly, the building was fully engulfed in flames within a very short time. In total there were around 1,700 animals in the stable. More than half were rescued and housed in replacement stables. However, the others died or had to be rescued by official veterinarians.
Almost 300 firefighters from 24 departments were on duty. Two of them suffered minor injuries. At around 1:20 a.m. there was a fire. The cause of the flames is still unclear and the amount of damage cannot yet be quantified.
