Who has old bicycles that students can repair?

The students of the Münichholz middle school, here Larisa, Luca and Moritz, with director Günther Briedl and teacher Rudi Steininger in front of the workshop shed

“It should be a campaign from which the students can still benefit in a few years,” says Rudi Steininger. The 59-year-old veteran teacher at Münichholz Middle School opened the door to director Günther Briedl with his idea of a cycling workshop for students.

Steininger noticed that the bike rack in front of the school is hardly used: “Our goal is for more students to come to school on their own bikes and not be brought to the door by car.” A problem, apart from the lack of cycle paths, is that many students no longer have their own bikes, and others’ bikes are often broken.

Tool for the students

“We therefore purchased tools for bicycle repairs and the corresponding materials,” says Steininger. In class, the students should be taught how to get hands-on in the workshop and how to maintain and repair their own bike.

“We are implementing this idea in a project as part of the Foundation for Economic Education,” says Briedl. During a market week from May 13th to 17th, sixth grade students will repair their first bikes under the guidance of Steininger. An excursion to a bike workshop is also on the agenda, a bike obstacle course is being set up, and the Steyr bike lobby will also provide information.

Cooperation with the BRG Steyr

“Although we already have a few bikes, we are still looking for other old bikes that are no longer needed for our project and are definitely in need of repair,” says Briedl. Among other things, this happens in a cooperation with the BRG Steyr, which also collects bikes in need of repair. If you have an old bike lying around at home and would like to donate it, you can contact Günther Briedl by email at s402072@schule-ooe.at.

During the market week, students from all other school levels will also show off their skills with projects. Among other things, muesli bars, jewelry and tea are produced. All of these products will be sold on June 20th as part of the school festival in the Münichholz school center.
