Sixty-one people have died in Thailand since the beginning of the year due to the extreme heat that hit the countrydeclared this Friday the Ministry of Health.
For almost a week in April, the capital’s authorities Bangkok issued daily extreme heat warnings. At some moments, the thermal sensation was more than 52 ºC.
According to a statement from the ministry, 61 people have died of heatstroke throughout the country since the beginning of this yearcompared to the 37 who died for this reason throughout 2023.
The ministry specified that the most affected area was the northeast of Thailand, essentially agricultural.
Scientists claim that the Climate change derived from human activity will cause more frequent, longer and intense heat waves.
The El Niño phenomenon itself contributes to this year’s exceptional heat, but the rate of warming in Asia is higher than the world average, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
In April, Thailand recorded a record temperature of 44.2°C in the northern province of Lampang, just a few tenths shy of last year’s national record of 44.6°C.
