The Wels-Grieskirchen-Eferding educational region has a new leader. Bernd Langensteiner was appointed head of 138 schools and 3,048 teachers with retroactive effect from May 1st.
The 46-year-old succeeds Karin Lang, who retired at the end of March. The educator, who lives in Pfarrkirchen near Bad Hall, has so far been one of four school quality managers in the education region. The deputy head, Doris Aflenzer, was left behind in the application process.
“We knew about each other’s applications and always dealt with them openly,” says Langensteiner. No problems are to be expected with future cooperation. Langensteiner and Aflenzer went through a hearing. The application deadline ended on December 11th. The results of the hearing and the ranking of the candidates were sent to the Ministry of Education. It is not known whether Minister Martin Polaschek followed the commission’s recommendation.
Resignation as VCL chairman
Langensteiner is no stranger to the local school system. As state chairman of the Association of Christian Teachers (VCL), he advocated for the concerns of staff at secondary schools. Both functions are incompatible. “For this reason, I am resigning from my role in the teachers’ union as soon as the successor has been clarified,” announces Langensteiner.
After studying mathematics and physics at the JKU, the educator from Garsten moved to Graz University of Technology, where he completed a doctorate in mechanical engineering.
Langensteiner gained his first experience as a teacher at the Enns high school and later at the HTL Wels before returning to Enns to take on the position of headmaster there. In 2021, the single and childless high school director took on the job of school quality manager in the Wels education region.
Langensteiner sees his first task as reorganizing the team in the education region: “We are currently missing a quality and a diversity manager. We are currently still looking.”
Teacher shortage in the cities
The main task of the education region as an extended arm of the ministry is resource planning in schools. “One of our biggest problems is the current shortage of teachers. We are trying to support the affected educational institutions as best we can.”
How high the current personnel requirement is will only become apparent after the end of the tender period (May 24th). “Finding teachers is more difficult in urban centers like Wels than in rural areas. But very good work is being done there.”
Many advance praises
The Ministry of Education’s personnel decision was received with goodwill in teaching circles. “Langensteiner is humane, fair and he communicates with teachers on an equal footing. But his top priority is the young people and their needs,” is how a school director describes him.
