It was a cloak-and-dagger campaign in February 2021. At minus 10 degrees, retired architect Günter Eberhardt and around ten colleagues occupied a green strip in the area of the West Bridge. Haste was necessary because, from the activists’ point of view, Asfinag’s “tree care measures” there degenerated into a real “tree massacre”. Some trees had already been felled when the tree guards arrived, others had been “cut down to a broom,” as Eberhardt put it.
More on the subject: Committed people from Linz who are committed to saving trees
The younger activists climbed the remaining trees, Eberhardt, who was almost 80 at the time, made do with a harvester – with success. Asfinag stopped the work and later spoke of a communication error with the forestry company.
Successful before the Constitutional Court
Asfinag is just a counterparty. Whether it’s a single tree or a large project, the controversial Linzer has a clear opinion on many things and is prepared to represent them with great personal commitment.
