The man had driven the wrong way north from a motorway service station near Kammern (Leoben district). The rescue workers were only able to rescue the man dead from the wreckage of his vehicle, as the Styria State Police Directorate announced on Saturday.
At around 4:15 p.m., the Styrian had taken the driveway towards Selzthal/Linz in the opposite direction of travel. There he collided with a truck driving towards Graz, driven by a 57-year-old from the Southeast Styria district. Despite rescue measures immediately initiated by the Red Cross, an emergency doctor, the volunteer fire department and the crew of the rescue helicopter Christophorus 17, the victim could no longer be helped. The truck driver remained uninjured.
The A9 was closed in the southbound direction until 7 p.m. The diversion took place via the Mautern exit onto the B113.
