How Vienna wants to become climate neutral by 2040

Heating with oil and gas is still common practice in many places in Vienna.

Some time ago, Austria’s federal capital set itself the goal of ending fossil dominance in heating and hot water by 2040. The approximately 600,000 gas heaters currently installed are also to be replaced by systems using renewable energy. There is now a concrete plan for exactly what the changeover should look like: the “Vienna Heat Plan 2024”, which was presented this week.

It takes into account the entire building stock in the urban area and shows in which areas an expansion of district heating is possible – which should be generated in a completely climate-neutral manner by 2040. However, those areas where other solutions will probably be necessary are also listed. Experts from Economics and Finance City Councilor Peter Hanke, Climate City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky and Housing Councilor Kathrin Gaal were involved in drawing up the plan.

Three categories were defined: areas in which district heating is the best option, those with good suitability for local heating networks and areas in which individual climate-neutral supply should be relied upon. In any case, the district heating network should be 1,700 kilometers in the future.

In addition, “local heat together” areas were defined in which district heating expansion is not planned for the time being due to existing capacities. At the same time, the areas have dense development. This makes them particularly suitable for communal heat supplies via local networks. Other existing energy sources such as geothermal energy should be used for this purpose. It is possible to supply several buildings together using heat pumps.
