The young man had already climbed the 1,691 m high Traunstein several times and took a different route each time. He was already able to tick off Hochkamp, O-Grat, Hernler, Mairalm and Naturfreundesteig, but he didn’t yet know the unmarked Zierlersteig. He set out to do this on Saturday when he began the climb around 5 a.m.
The Zierlersteig is an alpine path with medium-difficulty, short climbing sections. Since there are no markings, only path tracks or individual stone mandls, the route is only suitable for experienced mountaineers with good orientation skills.
At around 1,500 m above sea level, the 26-year-old came off the trail and landed on steep, rocky terrain where he could neither go forward nor back. He therefore made the emergency call at 9:20 a.m. and transmitted the coordinates of his location.
The Alpine police notified the Upper Austria police helicopter and the Gmunden mountain rescue service, which was standing by in the valley while the helicopter was able to locate the hiker at around 10:20 a.m.
Secured with dew
The alpinist was rescued with a 40 m long, variable rope and taken to the Laudachsee intermediate landing site and then to the “unterm Stein” landing site.
