Handball: Austria’s men qualified for the 2025 World Cup

Sebastian Frimmel was Austria’s most successful goalscorer.

Three days after the somewhat inconsistent performance in the 27:25 win in Tbilisi, Mykola Bilyk and Co. lived up to their role as favorites on Sunday in Vienna and defeated Georgia in the play-off second leg with 37:31 (21:17). Team boss Ales Pajovic’s ÖHB selection qualified for the eleventh major event since 2010.

The draw for the final round in Croatia, Denmark and Norway (January 14th – February 2nd) will take place on May 29th in Zagreb. Austria’s best thrower was wing Sebastian Frimmel with 7 goals.

After veteran winger Robert Weber was honored for his selection into the all-star team of the historic European Championships in January (8th place), Austria again had a difficult time in the first half. An early 6:2 (9th) melted into 8:7 (13th), and in a high-scoring first half the Georgians, who were represented in a final for the first time at the most recent European Championships, always remained within striking distance.

Austria has greatly improved its efficiency

While the throwing efficiency was clearly improved compared to Thursday and Georgia goalkeeper Zurab Tsintsadze wasn’t a big factor this time, the red-white-red too often couldn’t get the guests’ dynamic attacks under control. Substitutes such as two-man goalkeeper Florian Kaiper or backcourt player Markus Mahr were able to set the hoped-for accents, and at the end of the first half they were once again able to move ahead by four goals.

Georgia, led by Giorgi Tskhovrebadze, who was once again happy to score, couldn’t be completely shaken off even after the restart, but were five goals behind for the first time in the 39th minute (27:22). Austria’s victory was already apparent, but opportunities for a clearer lead were repeatedly missed. At the beginning of the final ten minutes the time had come. From 33:27 onwards, Red-White-Red played their ticket home to the World Cup and were also able to give players from the second row minutes of action.

Play-off for the Handball World Cup, second leg: Austria – Georgia 37:31 (21:17). Best throwers AUT: Frimmel 7, Hutecek 6, Bilyk, Wagner 5 each.
