CAF provided a loan of US million to Uruguay for the construction of a university headquarters

Udelar will have a new building, which could benefit more than 5,500 Uruguayan students.

The Andean Development Corporation (CAF) – development bank Latin America and the Caribbean- gave to Uruguay a loan to finance the construction of a university complex of approximately 7,500 square meters, an agreement that was entered into between the Paysandú Municipality and to which the University of the Republic (Udelar).

The construction of this new headquarters will benefit more than 5,500 students and 450 teachers and administrative staff, who make up the North Coast Regional University Center (Cenur). “This new university headquarters will make it possible to accompany the projected growth of Cenur, both in numbers of students and in diversification and specialization of the educational offer. The project includes the contracting of technical studies, works on three buildings and external spaces,” states the statement from the CAF.

With a total of 6 million dollars, the CAF will be part of the project where the Municipality of Paysandu – which will contribute a total of 7 million dollars – and Udelar, which will be the one with the greatest contribution to the investment since it will provide a total of 13 million dollars for the initiative.

The enthusiasm of the authorities

Several political representatives participated in the signing event, including the president Luis Lacalle Pou, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Azucena Arbeleche and the mayor of Paysandu, Nicolas Olivera. Also, there was the presence of a representative of CAF in Uruguay, Miguel Ostos, who was appointed last year in mid-November.

“You don’t understand the life of a community if you don’t think locally. Actions must be anchored where there is an individual who needs them. Today is an important day for Paysandu and the whole country, and I hope that later others will come and think more for this side of the Uruguay, and never lose the channel that makes us so heroic,” said the president. Luis Lacalle Pou.

For her part, the Minister of Economy highlighted the impact that this project will have on society in relation to the decentralization of university studies. “The completion of this project is extremely important because it has an enormous impact in terms of decentralization, quality for society, the growth of the country and the possibilities of innovation and impact on employment for citizens,” she remarked.

In coincidence with Arbeleche, the mayor of Paysandu expressed his satisfaction regarding the opportunities that this project will provide to local people. “80% of Cenur students are the first generation of university students in their family. With this project we are ensuring that people can live better, so that the child of any Uruguayan in this region does not have to go to Montevideo and can access top-level studies,” he said.

“It will be a pole of knowledge that will allow the confluence of the major functions of a university: quality teaching, open and accessible to all and top-level scientific research, with specialized equipment and technology that allows attracting and building human talent that accompany the growth of the country and the projection of Uruguay towards the world,” added the representative of the CAF in Uruguay.
