How do you get children and young people moving? How do you teach them to take personal responsibility? In what way do you train your social behavior and how to pay attention to those who are perhaps not doing as well as you?

Students from BRG solarCity Linz recently gave the answer to these questions in a remarkable way. At the school sports anniversary under the motto “Success as a team,” 409 students were active and ran so-called “hope laps,” each of which gave their money was worth it, as Patricia Teufl, sports and English teacher, reports.

11,000 euros for cancer aid

Moving, working together and doing good – the idea that fell on fertile ground stood on these three legs. The more than 400 active participants, who had to win one or more sponsors for each 300-meter-long “hope lap” they ran, ended up raising around 11,000 euros for a good cause. The money was donated to cancer relief.

What pleased Teufl and his fellow teachers most was not just the fact that the young people proved to be willing to exercise that day. In the end, 4,131 laps were a clear indication of what can be achieved when we move together.

By the way, the laps were “checked” at separate checkpoints, where colored rubber rings were collected for each lap completed, which were then added together at the end to produce the donation result. The focus was also on teamwork, as the helping hands of students, parents, teachers and secretaries were on hand.

There were many special moments for Teufl. One was when boys from the 5th grade supported a wheelchair user by taking turns walking around with him, i.e. they ran and pushed the wheelchair. “That was my highlight of the day,” says Teufl.
