Impatiently waiting for the opening of the outdoor pool season in the Welser Welldorado

The excavators are still operating on the 45,000 square meter outdoor pool area

Instead of the lifeguards, the construction workers and gardeners who have to re-lay the lawn on several sunbathing areas are still in charge at the Wels outdoor pool. As reported, the start of the season in the Welldorado has been delayed by a month. It doesn’t open until May 30th in Corpus Christi, and entry is free on that day as a small compensation for the late start to the season.

“Originally we wanted to open on May 1st, but unfortunately it didn’t work out the way we imagined,” said Mayor Andreas Rabl (FP) on Monday during a tour of the construction site with media representatives and professionals. Among other things, a cellar was found that no one knew existed, and delivery delays and the sometimes difficult weather made the renovation work take longer.

2.5 million will be invested

After renovating the indoor swimming pool by twelve million euros, the city of Wels has now invested a further 2.5 million euros in the outdoor areas. Paths were re-laid, the old cabin yard, toilet building and shower areas were renovated. Also new are the slide at the adventure pool, the facade (Zwergerlhaus and Radlertreff), the catering area in the rear part of the area and the fence. “Many Wels companies have taken part, the result speaks for itself,” says FP city councilor Ralph Schäfer (Bauen).

The construction work will take even longer in the rear area of the approximately 45,000 square meter site. “We have set aside 6,000 square meters there for the Motorikarena, in which 400,000 will be invested,” says FP Deputy Mayor Gerhard Kroiß, who is responsible for leisure activities. The state’s sports department contributes half of the investment costs for the free exercise offering for all age groups. The new leisure offer, which should be available from September, is part of the motor skills park offensive of the Upper Austrian sports region.

Back to the gardeners who have to replant tens of square meters. When asked when one will be allowed to access their painstakingly cultivated lawns, a gardener says “Seven weeks at the earliest.” Therefore, after the outdoor pool opens, some of the lying areas would have to remain closed until the lawn is robust enough for visitors to be allowed on it. “We hope that the bathers will stick to it,” says Patrick Würger, operations manager at the Welldorado. The Welldorado employs 30 people. Staff are still being sought; there are currently no shortages of lifeguards, although there is still a lack of cleaning staff.

Last year the outdoor pool had 85,800 guests; the absolute record of 91,100 visitors was in 2015. Up to 5,000 visitors frequent the outdoor pool on hot summer days.

Single entry costs 5.80 euros this year (last year: 5.50 euros). The block of ten comes to 57.70 euros for eleven entries. Permanent cabins, which can be rented for 125.50 euros, can be reserved from May 27th.
