Consumption in stores in April was strongly marked by the impact of the Tourism Week –which last year had fallen in March- causing a decrease in purchases in the first week of the month, especially in daily consumption items such as food and beverages.
As a fact, it does stand out that, unlike the previous year, the previous May 1where social gatherings on the occasion of Worker’s Day are common, there was no greater sale of those same two items.
The goods drinks(-4.6% year-on-year) and personal care (-4.3%) are those that show the greatest drop in consumption compared to 2023. These are items that are historically expensive in the Uruguay and which, for example, are the ones with the greatest price difference with neighboring countries.
Sales during 2023 in Uruguay closed a year in positive territory, with a 2% increase compared to the end of 2022, according to data collected by Radar Scanntech. However, if the impact of water purchases during the water crisisthe result is reversed and registers a drop of 2%.
