An increasing number of older drivers have reported to the ÖAMTC, as well as “a number of people who voluntarily want to have their driving safety checked and improved on everyday routes after a long break from driving,” said traffic psychologist Marion Seidenberger. Since autumn 2023, driving schools that want to offer the program have been trained and certified. The aim is to “increase personal responsibility, especially among older people in road traffic, without legal restrictions”.

Voluntary observation trip
The “Driving Fitness Check” is a voluntary observation trip: The participants drive together with driving instructors, usually in their own car and in familiar surroundings; only those involved know the result. Behavior in priority situations, choice of speed and distance to the vehicle in front as well as behavior towards other road users are recorded. Furthermore, the choice of lane, the implementation of the visual technique, compliance with traffic regulations in general and vehicle operation are observed.

At the end you will receive professional feedback as well as a participation sheet with personal recommendations. “Neither the authorities nor relatives will be informed about the result,” it is emphasized. “The ÖAMTC does not make money from the program – it is a service for those people who want to get professional feedback on their own responsibility,” said Seidenberger.
The “driving fitness check” takes around 90 minutes and costs 179 euros, for ÖAMTC members 149 euros. A list of driving schools and further information can be found at www.oeamtc.at/fahr-fitness-check.
