LINZ. Hot days and warm nights – that’s what the people of Linz can expect next summer. The more densely built-up the areas, the more the temperatures rise and, as a result, fall less. The Otto Glöckel School near Bulgariplatz, for example, is one of the heat islands in the Linz city area. Last year, 19 tropical nights were recorded there. These are nights in which temperatures do not drop below 20 degrees.
Long and intense heat waves
“In the last 15 years we have had at least one heat wave every year. And these are not only becoming more frequent and longer, but also more intense,” says Johannes Horak, head of the city of Linz’s urban climatology and environment department, at today’s press conference. The average maximum temperature during such a wave is higher from year to year. There were three heat waves in the state capital in 2023, two of which lasted more than 14 days. This leads to extreme strain on the body and circulation. “Having to wear a suit and tie for work is a lesser evil,” says Mayor Klaus Luger (SP).
30 degrees and more
Because the forecasts point towards more hot days – with temperatures beyond 30 degrees – the city of Linz is currently developing a heat emergency plan. Similar to the risk of flooding, this should help to efficiently inform the population about the risks and appropriate behavior – without cultural, social or health barriers. The aim is to reach all residents of Linz and prevent any cases of heat-related illnesses or deaths.
Heat warning system and cooling centers
In addition to a heat warning system, possibly in the form of an app, cooling centers that can be activated should also be created. These are larger buildings that remain cool even during longer periods of heat or are already air-conditioned and are recorded in their own plan. This should also include places in the city that do not warm up as much in summer and are accessible to more people.
Although the emergency plan will not be fully developed until mid-2025, according to Climate City Councilor Eva Schobesberger (Greens), measures will already be implemented this year. But the goal is a systematic process plan. (lg)
