Is Galatasaray Istanbul coming to Geinberg in the summer?

Galatasaray Istanbul is about to defend its title in the Turkish championship.

As early as 2018, those responsible at Therme Geinberg were busy bringing top international teams to the Innviertel for summer training camps. At that time, FC Heidenheim and a Russian first division team were guests in Geinberg. However, training took place on sports fields in other communities, the OÖN reported. The soccer field in the immediate vicinity of the thermal baths did not meet the needs of the soccer teams at the time. In 2022, the sports facility was completely renovated, creating two football pitches, a clubhouse and a fun court.

Two years ago, the top Greek club Olympiakos Piraeos, which made it into the final of the Europa Conference League this year, was a guest. Last year, Therme Geinberg’s “football offensive” continued to gain momentum. The Spanish first division team RCD Mallorca and the Israeli record champions Maccabi Haifa came to the Innviertel to stay overnight at the Spa Resort Geinberg and to train in the adjacent “Sportarena”. The teams were accommodated in their own area of the thermal spa hotel. “The needs of the teams are taken into account 100 percent, especially when it comes to services and meal times,” said marketing manager Natalie Schwendtner in an interview with OÖN last summer.

Icardi, Mertens and Zaha

This year too, several clubs will be relying on the advantages in Geinberg. According to reports, Galatasaray Istanbul, Turkey’s most successful club, will also be there. We are talking about a training camp from the beginning to mid-July. In the current season, the club with stars like Mauro Icardi, Dries Mertens, Hakim Ziyech and Wilfried Zaha will probably no longer be able to take the championship title away. Two games before the end of the season, the lead over arch-rivals Fenerbahce Istanbul is already six points. Nobody has yet wanted to officially confirm Galatasaray’s arrival. As in 2022 and 2023, especially in 2024, “many international, high-ranking football teams will be able to welcome people to Geinberg again,” replied Spa Resort Geinberg managing director Johann Sommerer to an OÖN query. “With regard to the top international teams that are booked in the summer months, we ask for your understanding that we are not allowed to disclose any details here (also for contractual reasons),” said Sommerer.

Tens of thousands of followers

If the team from Istanbul actually came to Geinberg, public interest would probably be great. Galatasaray probably has tens of thousands of followers in Upper Austria, Salzburg and Bavaria alone. In 2015, SV Ried played a test match (2:3) in their home stadium against Galatasaray. Of the approximately 5,000 visitors back then, more than half were excited about Istanbul.
