Former Greek President Papoulias has died

This was reported by the state broadcaster (ERT) and the semi-official Greek news agency ANA-MPA. “We say goodbye to Karolos Papoulias,” tweeted Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou. He advocated “social and national coherence”. Papoulias has been elected to the highest office in Greece twice. He served between March 13, 2005 and March 13, 2015. Papoulias was born in 1929 in the region of the north-west Greek city of Ioannina. He was a founding member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok) and one of the closest collaborators of the former Socialist Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou.

Papoulias lived in exile in Germany during the Greek colonel junta (1967-1974), where he studied law in Munich and Cologne. After that he held several government posts. Between 1993 and 1996 he was Foreign Minister.
