Uruguay prepares a plan to promote paid jobs for prisoners

The project “directly proposes the creation of employment” for inmates “through the promotion of work in private enterprises within the prison units themselves,” said the director of Coexistence and Citizen Security of the Ministry of the Interior, Santiago González.

The initiative seeks to establish “a series of conditions that will allow them to sell the products and services they generate, through personal initiatives or integrated by up to five people, all in a situation of confinement,” he added.

The “central premise” of the project is “that inmates can receive a salary for the work they do, which, in most cases, will be through a kind of self-management,” the official said.

To launch the program, the Ministry of the Interior will finance the purchase of supplies and the advertising of products or services on a specific web page, according to González.

Likewise, the authorities ensure that, through this mechanism, inmates can contribute to the pension and social security system as if they were self-employed, without a dependency relationship.
