Construction of a total of ten shore power systems began in Engelhartszell and Linz in the summer and autumn of 2023. This significantly reduces air and noise pollution because diesel generators are no longer necessary. Yesterday, Linz AG officially started operating the three systems in Engelhartszell after a successful test and commissioning phase.
In the future, a total of 41 ship operators will use the facilities in the state capital and the Innviertel Danube community with a total of 182 cabin ships. “On the initiative of the affected mayors of Engelhartszell and Linz, the state of Upper Austria and via donau, the construction was made possible through the partnership with Linz AG in Upper Austria,” says a press release from Linz AG. “It is a happy day for tourism in Upper Austria and a milestone for the energy transition,” said Economics and Energy Councilor Markus Achleitner yesterday in Engelhartszell.
“Uniform solution”
Upper Austria is once again proving to be a pioneer when it comes to sustainable tourism. Engelhartszell’s mayor Roland Pichler emphasized that he was “pro-shore power” for Engelhartszell from the start. He did not advocate an “island solution”, but rather a uniform solution with the state of Upper Austria on the Danube in order to ensure financing and long-term operation.
“The WGD Donau Oberösterreich Tourismus GmbH as the operator of the three piers in Engelhartszell, the via donau as the initiator of the important feasibility study, the state of Upper Austria, the market town of Engelhartszell and LINZ AG have pulled together,” said Pichler. “Inland shipping on the Austrian Danube makes an important contribution to regional added value. Cabin shipping in particular is enjoying increasing passenger and berthing numbers,” said Petra Riffert, member of the supervisory board of via donau and managing director of WGD Donau Oberösterreich Tourismus.
“The commissioning of the shore power systems also means that the power supply to the docked ships with diesel generators will be stopped. This will come in time for the start of the cruise season and will be good for people, the environment and also ship tourism on the Danube,” emphasized Josef Siligan, CEO of Linz AG .
