Title race in the 1st Class Northwest will be a case for two

St. Roman has been difficult to bring down so far this season and is currently one point behind league leaders Diersbach.

Unexpected things often happen. This particularly applies to Union St. Roman this season. After the team from Sauwald has always been in the lower table regions of the 1st Class Northwest in recent years, the “Rominger” are right in the middle of the fight for promotion to the district league this season. After an outstanding autumn and 28 points, they have now slipped back to second place behind Diersbach after “only” 14 points in the second half of the season, but the lead over the leaders is only one point. Since the third place from Raab is already six points behind St. Roman, the race for the title will probably be a case for two.

Ball stays flat

But both clubs don’t want to lean too far out of the window in the final spurt of the season. “We know where we come from. Promotion is not a must,” says St. Roman sports director Konrad Grömmer. “The second half of the season has been up and down so far. But it was to be expected that there would be more absences in the spring due to suspensions and injuries. And it’s no secret that the league is very balanced.”

The situation at fellow competitor Diersbach, which really got going in the spring, is assessed in a similar way. The current balance sheet for the second half of the season is seven wins, one draw and one defeat. “We just want to perform week after week. That was our approach and will remain so until the end. Everything else is not interesting for us,” says Josef Steinmann, section manager of the current league leaders. “It’s clear that we’re physically fit and in a good mood. If we keep playing like this, we’ll be able to hold our own at the front.” And in the end, being second could at least result in relegation.

“No matter how it turns out, we will have something to celebrate at the end of the season. We have already exceeded our goal of staying in the league by miles. If we end up playing in relegation or even get promoted straight away, that would be a great thing. But we are general “very calm and happy here in the club,” says St. Romans Grömmer.
