“Sowing hope” is the motto of this year’s Evangelical Church Congress, which will be celebrated in crowds on Sunday, May 26th. “We are expecting around 600 visitors and will focus on the future and development of the church,” says Alexander Lieberich, pastor of the Scharten tolerance community since 2017. The Burgenland native and father of three children looks after 1,030 members in his parish.
As with Catholics, it is becoming more difficult for Protestants to inspire people to believe. “In Scharten we have a very strong core community and also good church attendance with a lot of young people,” says Lieberich. But you can already see that “things are getting more difficult at the edges. The commitment is decreasing.” That is why the “Living from the Gospel” project was initiated throughout Austria, in which ideas are specifically implemented that are innovative and intended to promote life in the parishes. One of these projects is called “Family in Focus”, in which, for example, “Lern-KIWO” is organized during the summer holidays. Children and young people are professionally supported in their learning to make the start of the new school year easier.
The Upper Austria. Church Day takes place once a year and is organized alternately by one of the 34 parishes. Scharten is the oldest Protestant parish and a so-called tolerance community, which was founded after Joseph II’s patent of tolerance. “Tolerance congregation is, so to speak, a label; the congregations are considered very strong, lively and aware of history,” says the 36-year-old pastor, who was a vicar in Vienna.
On May 26th, the celebratory service will take place at 10 a.m. in the Schartner Tolerance Church with Superintendent Gerold Lehner, who will give the celebratory sermon. At the same time, a youth and children’s service will also take place in the festival tent and community hall.
After lunch, a colorful program starts at 12.30 p.m. with a creative workshop for young and old, the children’s musical “With Jesus on Board” (1.30 p.m.), which was created by the parish and the group of young people, and a guided hike to the memorial stone in Forst (2 p.m ) and children’s program.
