Biden and Pope express condolences over Tutu’s death

US President Joe Biden expressed his condolences on the death of Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa. He made the corresponding statement on Sunday, December 26.

The American leader named Tutu as one of the Founding Fathers of South Africa, praising his “service to the gospel by promoting racial equality and reconciliation in his native South Africa.”

“On behalf of the Biden family, we send our most sincere condolences to his wife Leah, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On behalf of the people of the United States, we send our deepest condolences to the people of South Africa, who mourn the loss of one of their most significant Founding Fathers, ”the American leader said in a statement.

In addition, Biden noted, “with courage and moral clarity” Tutu inspired the US resolve to change the country’s policy “towards the repressive apartheid regime in South Africa.”

Pope Francis also expressed his condolences over the death of Tutu. On his behalf, Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin sent the Apostolic Nuncio to South Africa, Archbishop Peter Brian Wells, a telegram stating that the pontiff trusts the soul of the deceased “to the loving mercy of the Almighty God.”

Earlier on Sunday, the office of the South African president announced the death of 1984 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu. On behalf of all South Africans, President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Tutu.

The archbishop died at the age of 90 in Cape Town, he was the last surviving Nobel laureate from South Africa, the office said.

Desmond Tutu is the Anglican Archbishop of Cape Town, an active fighter against the policy of racial discrimination and segregation of the country’s indigenous population. In 1984 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for courage and heroism in the fight against apartheid.” In 2013, Tutu received the Templeton Prize.
