He Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attack against the prime minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, who is in serious condition after being shot five times in the city of Handlová.
“The Government of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay expresses its firmest condemnation of the attack suffered by the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Robert Fico, today,” he said. Political motivations
For the minister, “there is no doubt that it was an attack with political background”, by linking the attack in the context of “an inability to accept the will of society. Slovakia has been immersed in massive protests since recent weeks against controversial decisions of the government, made up of the nationalist left and the extreme right, with measures such as the closure of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, that was investigating members of Fico’s party, and the plans to close public radio and television RTVS.
