The first types of vegetables were planted in the fields of Upper Austria at the end of February this year. Thanks to the optimal growing conditions, ripe crops – such as radishes, lettuces and kohlrabi – can now be bought in stores ten to 14 days earlier than usual.

However, there is room for improvement in the framework conditions, according to the Upper Austrian Chamber of Agriculture (LKOÖ). The ban on certain plant protection products, for example, limits competitiveness if they are allowed to continue to be used in neighboring countries. This is also reflected in the number of vegetable farmers, which, according to estimates by the Vegetable Growing Department, have fallen by five companies from 184 to 179 compared to the previous year. “After the decline of 111 hectares in 2023, an area decline of another 97 hectares is unfortunately also expected for 2024,” said Franz Waldenberger, President of the LKOÖ, in a press release.
70,000 tons of vegetables
However, around 70,000 tonnes of vegetables are expected for the current season – in 80 different varieties – resulting in a total production value of 33 million euros. Although vegetables are grown almost everywhere in Upper Austria, the Eferding district alone is responsible for around half of the production. The area share of organically grown vegetables has now increased to 29 percent.
