A corresponding amendment to the Radio Equipment Market Surveillance Act was unanimously passed in the National Council on Wednesday. From the end of April 2026, the requirements will also apply to notebooks. This implements an EU directive.
Uniform plugs also for Apple
The EU Commission and the EU Parliament have been working on uniform regulations for chargers for more than fifteen years. For the first time in 2009, the Commission agreed on uniform standards with most manufacturers in a declaration of intent. However, these were not mandatory; Apple, which is now the world’s second largest smartphone manufacturer, did not take part. The agreement expired in 2014. With the EU directive passed in October 2022, Apple must also adhere to the standardized plugs. Specifically, from December 28th, most devices affected by the regulation must have a USB-C port.
Less electronic waste
The new requirements are intended to reduce electronic waste in the EU by almost 1,000 tons annually and save thousands of tons of CO2. Above all, the Commission expects that consumers will use their cables for longer and buy fewer chargers. So far they have been spending a total of around 250 million euros per year on chargers that are not actually needed.
