Seismologists have recorded tremors of magnitude 5.4 in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of the Greek island of Crete. Information about this follows from the message of the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).
The earthquake was recorded on December 26 at 18:59 UTC time (21:59 Moscow time). The epicenter was located 175 km east of the city of Heraklion. The focus was located at a depth of 10 km.
Information about possible casualties and destruction was not received.
According to the newspaper Proto Thema, this is the second earthquake in the region over the past day. Prior to that, on Sunday afternoon, Crete experienced a 5.2-point jolt on the Richter scale. According to the Geodynamic Institute, the earthquake occurred 46 km south of Kassos, and the depth of the source was 8.9 km.
On September 28, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 hit the Greek island of Crete. The outbreak was located at a depth of 13.9 km.
An earthquake also hit the island the day before, with a magnitude of 6.5. The epicenter was located 20 km from Heraklion. As a result of the seismic event, one local resident died, and dozens of people were injured.
