According to witnesses, the man left the Reichensteinhütte on Eisenerzer Reichenstein towards the valley at 1 p.m. but never returned home. Shortly after 8 p.m., Alpine police and mountain rescue began searching for the missing person.
At around 10:15 p.m., a search party found the hiker in a scree field around 170 meters below the actual path. According to the police, any help came too late for the 51-year-old and he died at the scene of the accident. Emergency services rescued the hiker and brought him down to the valley.
How the accident occurred is the subject of the investigation. However, third-party negligence is ruled out, the Styrian Security Directorate announced on Thursday morning.
