Taiwan: the reason why the fight broke out in Parliament
Lai Ching-Te will take office next Monday after having won the elections in January. However, his Democratic Progressive Party (PDP) lost its majority in Parliament. The opposition, the Kuomintang (KMT)has more seats, but not enough to form a majority on its own, so it has been working with the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP).
In this way, the opposition seeks to give Parliament greater powers of control over the Government. However, the president-elect’s party denounces that the KMT and TPP are trying to impose their proposals, avoiding the usual consultation process, which is why they are described as doing ““unconstitutional abuse of power”.
The truth is that this is not the first time that in the Parliament of Taiwan clashes occur. In 2020, amid a dispute over the relaxation of pork imports from USAKuomintang legislators They threw pig entrails onto the floor of the chamber.
