According to a statement from the province of Belluno, the animal destroyed an entire beehive in the municipality of Fornesighe on Thursday night and ate a large amount of honey and honeycomb. The surviving bees were lost due to the bad weather in the area these days. The damage to the beekeeper is considerable.
Camera traps set up
The police were called in to investigate the “crime scene”. Footprints and scratches were found on the frame of the hive, suggesting a bear was the culprit. The officers set up some camera traps in the area. The suspect is a wandering male looking for new territories that could have come from Trentino.

The migration of bears in the Belluno area is nothing new: on the night of May 9th, one specimen was detected using a camera trap in the municipality of Vigo di Cadore. Given the recent “incursion” in Val di Zoldo, the provincial police recommend that beekeepers check their hives daily, especially those located far from homes.
