The carabinieri in the northern Italian city of Rovigo have reported a 42-year-old metal worker. He is suspected of sabotaging at least five of eight speed cameras damaged in Rovigo province in 2023.
Tools that he is said to have used for the destruction were confiscated from the house of the man from the province of Padua. The metal worker was identified through evaluation of video surveillance cameras. He had sawed off the support mast of the radar traps with a cutting disk. Therefore, the saboteur was nicknamed “Fleximan” by the media. He faces up to three years in prison and a fine of 5,000 euros for vandalism and damage.
Several speed traps illegally “deactivated”
In recent months, several speed traps have been illegally “deactivated” in northern Italy. A cult has arisen around the unknown man. On social networks he was hailed as the “Robin Hood of drivers”. A total of 24 devices have now been destroyed – including in Lombardy and Trentino. More than half a dozen public prosecutors are working on the cases. It is still unclear whether this was the act of an individual or an organized group.
The acts of sabotage have sparked debate about the number of radars deployed. Because Italy is the country with the most speed cameras in Europe: there are 11,130 devices nationwide. Consumer protection associations complain that municipalities are setting up speed traps in order to use the fines to replenish their empty coffers. Recently there have been repeated protests against the speed cameras.
