Wave of violence in Mexico before the presidential elections

The country faces an electoral process marked by violence, with 27 murders of candidates and aspirants in the last year.

According to a recent report by the independent organization Electoral Laboratoryin the last year there have been registered 27 murders of candidatespre-candidates and aspiring public officials.

Two weeks before the elections, where 20,375 positions will be chosen, of which 19,746 are local and 629 are federal, situations of violence continue, including kidnappings, threats and deaths.

In its latest report, updated to April 2the organization denounced 157 cases of attackswhich led to 51 homicidesof which 27 corresponded to candidates for some type of public office. There were also nine kidnappings, 22 attacks that did not cause victims and 75 records of threats.

Violence in Mexico increases “in a worrying manner”

The Government does not recognize the violence that continues to escalate in the country. This was expressed in a press conference by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador: “There is no more violence“There are more homicides than in the entire six-year period,” he said. In that sense she explained that “There are fewer robberies, fewer kidnappings and fewer federal crimes” than in previous governments.

Meanwhile he Electoral Laboratory report points out that “the violence associated with the elections has had a worrying increase trend.” The survey indicates that the states with the highest number of cases are Guerrero (12 murders), Veracruz (8 murders) and Michoacán (7 murders).

The highest number of attacks within the framework of the campaign were recorded in Chiapas and Michoacán. In turn, in the latter, 33 mayoral candidates have abandoned their aspirations and 66 more had to ask for protection from authorities due to threats to their integrity. There were also murders of mayors, party and organization leaders, as well as candidates for different positions.

According to different political parties, “There are no guarantees to participate in local electoral processes” that continue to develop in a territory where violence reigns.
