The pensioner (73) was driving his car towards Au on the Au freight road from the Saxen model airfield around 6:30 p.m. According to his own statements, the driver stopped at the stop sign at the unguarded railway crossing in Eizenau. As the 73-year-old described to the police, he looked left and right and then continued driving. However, he overlooked the train coming from the right towards St. Valentin, which was approaching at around 60 km/h.

The train driver (26) tried to warn the car driver by honking, but it was too late: the white Skoda was hit by the railcar and thrown into a field. The train came to a halt after an emergency stop at the level crossing.

The 73-year-old was injured in the collision. He was flown to the Neuromed Campus Linz with the Christophorus 10 rescue helicopter. The train driver and the 30 train passengers were uninjured in the accident. Alcohol tests on both drivers were negative.
