16-year-old slipped and injured while hiking on the Plassen

A 50-year-old from the Liezen district and his 16-year-old son set out together for a hike on the 1,953 meter high Plassen in the morning. From Hallstatt they climbed on foot over the Salzberg to their destination summit. At lunchtime they decided to descend on the north side towards Gosau and take another route back to Hallstatt.

When descending on the north side, they had to cross an area covered in old snow in a steep gully. The father went ahead and cut steps into the compact old snow, his son followed him. The 16-year-old lost his footing. He slipped about five meters across the snowfield, fell over a three-meter-high rock step and came to rest in a meadow.

His father came to his aid, but due to his injuries, the teenager was unable to climb down independently. The C14 emergency medical helicopter and the Hallstatt mountain rescue center were alerted. After the rescue, the 16-year-old was taken to the Bad Ischl hospital. The father remained unhurt.
