Silvio Berlusconi’s candidacy for the Presidency adds obstacles

Italia Viva’s rejection of Berlusconi’s candidacy appears as a weight brake on the aspirations of the three-time premier to become, next January, the successor of the current president Sergio Mattarella, who ends his seven-year term and announced that he will not seek re-election.

In Italy, the president of the republic is elected through 630 deputies and 315 senators, to which are added 58 special delegates from the 20 regions of the country. The six current senators for life also participate with the right to vote.

Berlusconi, 85, is emerging for the moment as a candidate of the alliance of center-right and extreme-right forces in which two government forces coexist, Fuerza Italia and the League, and an opposition nationwide, Hermanos de Italia.

The current premier Mario Draghi, meanwhile, did not rule out the possibility of seeking the Presidency, although he warned that he would only do so if the decision does not put the parliamentary majority that supports him at risk.

The date of the election of the next president will be defined at the beginning of the year and will take place between the end of January and the beginning of February.
