Although she was born with a career as a fashion designer, Miuccia Prada, born Maria Bianchi in 1949, wanted to do anything but work in the family business. In 1913, her grandfather Mario and his brother founded a factory for high-quality leather goods. The name back then: Fratelli Prada, the Prada brothers.
The young woman went in a completely different direction: she studied political science and trained in mime. For a while she was also a member of the Communist Party – and even back then she preferred to wear Yves Saint Laurent dresses to demonstrations rather than worn jeans like her fellow students.
From studying politics to fashion business
When she was 28, she took over the company from her mother Luisa. She took their birth name and from then on called herself Miuccia – her childhood nickname. Her husband Patrizio Bertelli, with whom she has two sons, encouraged her to pursue a career as a designer.
Success came quickly – and started with a handbag made of black military nylon. Her first design work for the family business turned out to be a brilliant idea. Practical, light, waterproof – and above all useful.
