The Welser PSV has a long tradition. 60 years ago, the city gave the aspiring police athletes a 7,000 square meter property on the Traun. There, club members built a clubhouse and two firing channels on their own initiative. After six decades without any significant investments, the home is in need of renovation and the shooting ranges also leave a lot to be desired. The OÖNachrichten reported.
So what could be more obvious than asking the public sector for support? PSV chairman Michael Hager presented the city, state and federal government with a 4.8 million euro renovation concept, which, in addition to converting the dilapidated clubhouse into a zero-energy facility, envisages a 30 by 30 meter shooting hall. “I don’t want everything to go to waste and the sports center to be torn down in five to ten years,” says Hager, urging the renovation.

While the federal and state governments together promised a grant of around 1.6 million euros, individual members of the city council expressed doubts. VP city councillor Martin Oberndorfer, for example, questioned the dimensions of the new shooting hall and suggested that the plans be scaled down. He also complained that the city had to make a decision by the beginning of July, otherwise the funding commitment from the Ministry of the Environment would expire. City councillor Thomas Rammerstorfer from the Greens has already made up his mind. His party will reject a funding application for the new shooting hall.
Conflict of interest?
The SPÖ, in turn, is offended by the fact that sports officer and deputy mayor Gerhard Kroiß (FP) is the club president of the PSV: “It remains questionable whether there are conflicts of interest here,” said SP deputy mayor Klaus Schinninger. Most recently, Kroiß spoke out in favor of the project. Chairman Hager is also confronted with a possible conflict of interest. His son’s architectural office supplied the new hall plans.
In order to politically legitimize the subsidy request for a total of three million euros, Hager offered the city the 7,000 square meter property in return. In order to conclude the deal, the club members must be interviewed beforehand. The vote is scheduled for today, Wednesday.
Money should also flow from the club treasury. PSV promised its own contribution of 500,000 euros. Membership fees will be increased.
About the project:
The Schützenhalle, planned by the architectural firm MUH (Moser & Hager), measures 900 square meters. It replaces the two firing channels and the outdoor shooting ranges, where small and large caliber rifles are still used today. 20 stands are planned. In the winter months, the hall, which is soundproof from the outside, will also provide space for archers. The costs for the hall alone are around three million euros.
