He apologized for his misconduct, but he didn’t really show insight: On Tuesday morning, the police stopped a pensioner in the Wels city area who – as it turned out – had been driving without a driver’s license for decades. The now 69-year-old had his driving license revoked 40 years ago.
Further travel is prohibited
Although he was sorry, the trip was necessary from his point of view, the man told the officers who checked him at around 11:20 a.m. In his defense he had to put forward the following curious argument: He had been a “loyal and good customer of the police” for 40 years because he had always paid the fines. He will probably have to do this again now. The police prohibited him from continuing his journey and he was reported.
A fine of up to 2,180 euros
It was not known exactly how much his crime would cost the “fare evader”. One thing is certain: If you drive a vehicle in Austria without a driving license – regardless of whether your driving license was never obtained or was revoked due to a crime – you have to expect a fine of between 363 euros and 2,180 euros. In general, the extent of the punishment increases with the number of violations. A prison sentence is also not ruled out.
