As the Ministry of Health announced, a minibus fell from a ferry into the Nile north of the Egyptian capital Cairo on Tuesday. “The number of victims is ten and could rise,” said ministry spokesman Hossam Abdelghaffar.
According to the newspaper “Al-Ahram”, the bus driver had released the handbrake on the ferry. He tried to flee but was caught. Two of the victims, who according to the report all worked on an “export-oriented fruit plantation”, were only 13 years old, according to a list published by the newspaper. With the exception of a 40-year-old woman, all of the other victims were 16 years old and younger.
Search for missing persons continued
The accident reportedly occurred in the village of Abu Ghalib, about 50 kilometers northwest of Cairo. Villagers rowed small wooden boats onto the river to help rescue workers search for survivors. With the help of a crane, they finally managed to lift the minibus out of the water.
Nine injured people, most of whom, according to Al-Ahram, are also minors, were taken to nearby hospitals, according to the Ministry of Health. A search was still underway that evening for five missing people. According to official figures, at least 1.3 million children work in Egypt. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), most of them do unpaid work in family businesses.
