Storms called for emergency services in Upper Austria, videos show a tornado in Graz

Numerous videos of the mini tornado near Graz circulated on social media.

Geosphere Austria warned on its online presence of sometimes strong thunderstorms that are moving further north, “large amounts of rain can fall in a short period of time,” it said. On social media, ORF weather expert Sigi Fink shared numerous videos of a mini tornado that was spotted over Graz:

Second highest thunderstorm warning

The “Kleine Zeitung” reported online about floods in the Leoben and Voitsberg area, where Alexander Podesser, head of Geopshere Styria, also confirmed the Graz tornado, “albeit a small one.”

The second highest thunderstorm warning was initially issued by Geosphere Austria for eastern parts of Styria and smaller areas in the northwest of Lower Austria. A yellow weather warning was in effect for parts of Upper Austria on Tuesday evening.

Several missions in Upper Austria

In the late afternoon, emergency services in the Ried im Innkreis and Vöcklabruck districts were called upon due to heavy rain. The fire department received its first alarm at around 4:50 p.m. Cellars had to be pumped out and flooded traffic routes cleared. The measuring point of the Upper Austria Hydrographic Service registered a good 45 mm of precipitation in Vöcklabruck within a short time, and in Geboltskirchen it was a good 30 mm.

The state control center recorded the most severe weather operations in Obernberg am Inn (Ried im Innkreis district) and Regau (Vöcklabruck district). But the fire brigade’s help was also required in Frankenburg am Hausruck, Gmunden, Pühret, Atzbach and Attnag-Puchheim. In Gallspach (Grieskirchen district) a roof had to be secured. The highest wind peak measured in Upper Austria occurred in Enns: the Geosphere Austria measuring station showed 70.6 km/h.

The turbulent weather is likely to continue for the next few hours: At night there will be some heavy rain showers. Only in the morning hours does the sky over Upper Austria calm down. Temperatures drop to 14 to 11 degrees.

Wednesday is once again changing: While the clouds clear up in the morning to make room for the sun, cumulus clouds form again in the afternoon and bring local thunderstorms. AThe shower tendency is highest in the Salzkammergut and the Pyhrn region. Snow falls above around 2300 meters.
