For the mayor of Linz, Klaus Luger (SP), there were no ifs and buts a year and a half ago: After the historian’s report on historically contaminated street names, which he had launched three years earlier, had revealed 64 “problem cases” among the 1,158 street names in Linz , four streets of the highest level 1 were renamed. Luger had made it clear from the start that he was in favor of a political decision based on the report of the historians’ commission.
A very similar discussion has been simmering in Steyr for years. In November 2022, City Councilor for Culture Katrin Auer (SP) announced in the OÖNachrichten that the issue would definitely not be put off for a long time. The former director of the Working World Museum, who was new to Steyr politics at the time, could be expected to be dynamic in coming to terms with the city’s Nazi past.
However, even a year and a half later, Auer is still a long way from the clarity of Klaus Luger on this sensitive topic. Unfortunately there is no budget for this this year, says the city councilor for culture, but a year of ups and downs “doesn’t make things fat.”
This means that Auer is missing the target. In the autumn, she will most likely move to the National Council as a member of parliament. And that means she will probably have to give up one or two tasks in the city senate. And if, as expected, these are not her environmental agendas – here she is responsible for the climate neutrality roadmap, which will be discussed in the Environment Committee on Monday – then it will be the cultural sector that she loses. A possible renaming would no longer be her task, and the issue would therefore be on the back burner for her.
