Putin congratulated Charles de Gaulle’s son on the 100th birthday

On December 27, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a congratulatory telegram to the veteran of the French Resistance movement, admiral, son of former French President Charles de Gaulle Philippe.

The Russian leader warmly congratulated Philippe de Gaulle on his 100th birthday.

“I would like to express my admiration for the courage and heroism shown by you during the years of struggle against the fascist invaders, as well as gratitude for your kind attitude towards our country,” the message of the President of the Russian Federation says.

Putin also wished the French veteran good health, prosperity and good spirits. The letter on behalf of the President was handed over on Monday in Paris by the Russian Ambassador to France Alexei Meshkov.

After the liberation of Paris, Philippe de Gaulle took part in offensives in the Vosges, Lorraine, Alsace, in the liberation of Colmar, and in other battles of World War II. In battles, he was wounded six times. In the post-war period he studied at military academies, commanded ships.

Among the numerous military awards honored by the veteran is the Soviet Order of the Patriotic War of the first degree.

Several years ago, the admiral lost his wife and now lives alone, but his four sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren often visit him, the son of the hero of the day Pierre de Gaulle told TASS.

On December 17, Vladimir Putin congratulated Pope Francis on his 85th birthday in a telephone conversation. The Russian leader especially noted the high authority of Francis in the world, as well as his contribution to the development of relations between the Russian Federation and the Vatican.
