After long negotiations, the matter has finally been settled. Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (VP), Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens), Governor Thomas Stelzer (VP), Deputy Governor Manfred Haimbuchner (FP) and Linz Mayor Klaus Luger were able to announce a success today in the Stone Hall of the State Parliament. The financing for the Linz light rail system has been secured. A corresponding 15a agreement has been signed. “The federal government is providing 470 million euros, which is money well invested,” said Brunner.
A maximum of 50 million euros from the city treasury
The city of Linz will contribute 50 million euros. And not a cent more than that, because Mayor Klaus Luger (SP) successfully negotiated a cap for the city. The remaining project costs will be borne by the state of Upper Austria – around 420 million euros. “Good things come to those who wait,” said Minister Gewessler, alluding to the lengthy negotiations that preceded this agreement. Today’s signing of the contract is “the step from planning to the construction site.”

But things won’t happen quite so quickly: the submission planning for the project should be ready by the end of next year. Gewessler announced that construction will begin in 2028. In 2032 – i.e. in 8 years – the regional light rail will run from the main train station to the university or to the Mühlkreis station. The planners promise that the travel time from the train station to the university district will be more than halved. However, the construction of the second section from the university further up into the Mühlviertel to Pregarten will take longer. The planning of the preliminary project should now begin here.
Stelzer and Luger underlined the importance of the project for commuters. “More than 120,000 people commute to work in Linz every day,” said Luger. And the trend is rising.
