Kripperlroas: The people of Ebense open their living rooms

Last year, the traditional Ebenseer Kripperlroas had to be canceled for the first time in its long history. The corona pandemic had made the popular viewing of private crèches impossible.

This year – at least as far as this is concerned – normality is returning to Ebensee. From Christmas Day to Candlemas (February 2nd) it is again motto in the Salinengemeinde: “Gemma Kripperl look!” Around ten private nativity scene owners open their doors to present their lovingly designed miniature landscapes to friends of tradition.

Of course, this cannot be done entirely without security measures. 2G proof is required for all daycare visitors, as is the wearing of an FFP2 mask. A minimum distance from other visitors must be observed. In addition, all other prescribed measures apply.

The tour best begins in the Ebensee Museum (open daily from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.), where special pieces of jewelery can be seen in a special exhibition. For example the beautiful nativity scene of the former Alpensteig inn or a wonderful oriental South Tyrolean nativity scene. In the museum, in the church and in the parish office there are plans with the help of which the way to the private nativity scene owners can be found.

Ebensee has a long tradition of nativity scenes. Nowhere else in the Salzkammergut are there as many nativity scenes as here, and the works of art are famous for a reason. In the 19th century, small house cribs developed into landscape cribs rich in figures, often filling entire rooms. The typical Salzkammergut landscape was built around the stable with the birth of Jesus as the center of the Ebenseer Nativity scene.
